Well I have never personally had a desire to have a huge rhinestoned pussycat emblazoned on my left buttcheek down to my right ankle or the word PHAT...even if it is spelled with a PH...but apparently J.C. Penny believes that their teen girl customers would, as Kimora Lee Simmons launches a Junior line entitled Fabulosity, just in time for back-to-school shopping. Impromptu children's dance classes with Britney Spears at Millenium, Fabulosity for our young impressionable teen girls...what's next? I welcome you to make your ominous predictions....

Music adds color to a day full of designing.
Designers Mixtape is a collection of music picked by designers around the globe. I dont know many designers who dont have external hard drives filled with mp3s. You can stream music off their site and each designer made a piece for their stream.

South By Southwest coverage from our guest editor, Monina!
Our lovely friend and guest editor Monina, has recently returned from her first trip to SXSW in Austin - one of the largest music conferences/festivals and she's shared her experience with us:
Hey guys, I'm now fully recovered from SXSW (South By Southwest) =) Since working on marketing and events at SPIN, I've had the amazing opportunity to experience some of the greatest live music events around...Coachella, V-fest and Vegoose to name a few.
This year, SPIN hosted it's annual Spin @ Stubb's (line up included X, Vampire Weekend, Raveonettes, etc.) party along with a massive artist lounge (SPIN and MySpace San Jacinto Saloon) in the heart of 6th street. In comparison of other festivals SXSW has literally thousands of artists you could go see. For those who weren't able to experience the lounge, it was a place for artists, bands and our guests to relax, pick up some swag and be interviewed for SPIN/MySpace
My highlights:
1. Flying in from New York and landing in Austin in 85 degree weather
2. Tex Mex - so it's not exactly mexican food from Cali, but hey - it did the job
3. Meeting N.E.R.D. Can I just say that Pharrell can charm the paint off of a wall?
Description: Phantom Planet previews the title track from their upcoming 2008 release Raise the Dead at the SPIN & MySpace San Jacinto Saloon during South by Southwest 2008.
To check out our coverage go to Spin Magazine
To check out SXSW coverage go to to SXSW website
Hope to see ya'll in Austin for 2009!
-Monina
Thank you Monina for the pics and for giving iDR some details on SXSW.

JAPAN vs. UK: PingMag’s Desk Project!
Creative spaces are fun, inspiring, and sometimes chaotic and messy. Many times I've lingered at another designers desk poking around their gadgets, flipping through their mags or books, developing a prank (tape on a an optical mouse is the quick & easy), and such. Ping Magazine took it a step further and sent out an email to people they have interviewed (mostly creatives such as art directors, designers, writers, etc) from the UK and Japan. What does your desk look like?

Le Corbusier, Villa Savoye. Paris
One of my good friends, Phil, from design school had a chance to visit Villa Savoye. Above are some photos he had taken. I find it fitting that he visited Villa Savoye by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier, when majority of our design schooling and skills underly heavily on the Swiss and the International Typographic Style. Phils thoughts are that "Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye is simply amazing. It's pretty much an unreal space that you can frame a composition here, and then turn around to effortlessly frame another. Then you step back a bit to realize every little nook, cranny and column just make perfect sense. Brilliant design is always as equally functional!"
The Villa Savoye was build circa 1929. The house was emblematic of Le Corbusier work in that it addressed "The Five Points", his basic tenets of a new aesthetic of architecture. For further details on the Villa Savoye and Le Corbusier's work click here.

Digital Agency of the Year, AKQA

Four years later, Mr. Ahmed founded AKQA, a digital agency built on yet another collision. "Our belief is that marketing and product have converged," says Mr. Ahmed, the agency's chairman. "The consumer doesn't separate the marketing experience from the product experience."
Only the densest of old-school agency execs will need that one explained. There are a million ways to see how it's a dark day for advertising as it was practiced throughout most of the 20th century. Study after study shows that consumer immunity to advertising is as jacked up as it's ever been. Put simply, even if you get people to watch your ads, those ads aren't gonna fool anyone. That's why, it could be argued, the notion of agency as embodied by AKQA and shared by only a few others is the most vital one around.

Hes Fly.
I fell in love with Pharrell when I saw him in the Mariah Carey Video, Say Something.
I thought he was ok before. Hes a rapper, producer, whatever blah blah blah. Until I saw him in Paris, in Burberry rain coat, clean collar, V neck sweater...then I fell for him (in the music video of course..I had you there, thought I went to Paris huh?). I even bought the video on iTunes so I can enjoy it at anytime. Pharrell is in the current Instyle Magazine. He is featured as their Man of Style pick. Although his personal lines Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream are decent, I love his personal style. He looks clean cut with a touch of lux. He loves Louis Vuitton and still manages to keep his hip hop swagger. MTV’s style guru Coltrane Curtis says this: “Pharrell is the yin and yang of fashion. He can give you something real grimy—gold teeth, tattoo on his neck—but he can also give you a white button-up that’s so crispy and so grown man. He’s fly.” And what I genuinely love about him is his creativity. He has been able to tie his insatiable taste for fashion with music. His recent collaborative efforts is with Camille Miceli Jewelry for Louis Vuitton, Blason.
Enjoy

Your about me section on the A# website states "to make satirical light of the serious times we live in." How does fashion become valuable in the world we live in today where jobs are scarce, economy Is low, and war is a part of our daily vocab?
Fashion is a platform to express Political views. A billboard of sorts. At the same time the economy is horrible right now and I don't honestly see it picking up in the immediate future. At the very least it can convey a message.
Dita von Tese or Rose Mcgown?
Hmmm ... Thats a weird one.
Neither of them are really my style (Especially after messing with Mr. Manson).
However ... Rose has shitty style.
Dita is one of the true Pin up / Burlesque / Fetish queens of our time.
So, if I had to pick... Dita. She probably has better taste in music as well. Or maybe not.
I think Masuimi Max or Ruby Leu would be a better question.
In which case ...
RUBY LEU ! She's a siiiiick Psychobilly DJ !
Fiberops definitely has a certain theme, look and feel. Do you have an ideal consumer while designing your collection?
I have a very defined ideal consumer for Fiberops.
Unfortunately, that customer does not shop in most of the doors Fiberops is in. LOL ... Oh well.
Aly, Coming from Alphanumeric, was there anything you brought in from the past that improved the business and creativity of Fiberops?
It's funny because only the few people that really pay attention to design details realize or even take time to mention the design similarities between the old A# cut and sew and the contemporary Fiberops designs. (Graphically, and target customer wise they are VERY different.)
Similar dish with different sauce and garnish.
From a business perspective... I've been through lots of ups and downs. I'd like to think that I've finally come into my own and surrounded myself with people with good business sense.
I don't think anyone knows every thing.
Life is a perpetual learning experience.
Its Design Related loves your spring line. It's a nice contrast from the all over print that we've been seeing, refreshing as well. How do you feel your apparel will sustain trends even after say 1 season or a year after it has released?
LOL. Not to sound cocky... But by doing what Fiberops does. Meaning NOT following trends. I already see alot of these lemmings jumping all inside my crews (FISM-Fuel Injected Suicide Machine) nuts. Clown ass brands floundering to find the "Next thing" , so all of a sudden they want to do MC club / Hot Rod / Pin-Up / Nose Art / Sexploitation "inspired" stuff.
Funny thing is ... We live that ... They don't.
So.... Next year their brands will look completely different once again. We (FISM) are niche brands that immediately cater to a specific customer. With Fiberops, I could care less about what's "hot in the streets" and actually make all my fits small just so it will never be "that" brand. In short ... I have no urge to "sustain trends" or follow them for that matter. Fiberops will always have a core customer. Culture vs Fashion Trend. IE: I have tattoo's I do not need to wear them on my clothing.

Music is one of my main drives in life and totally is one of my main muses and creative inspiration.
I listen to many genres of music. I DJ several nights a week at various bars and clubs in SD.
Mostly:
60's / Northern Soul
Garage Rock / Psych / Freak Beat
Jump Blues
Rockabilly
I'm a partner in a local Rockabilly label called Bop-N-Stomp records.
I do all the art direction and DJ at our event's :
http://www.myspace.com/therockabillyshakeout
In short... Music is TOTALLY My Muse !
Many Fiberops styles have been and still are named after songs or musicians/bands. If I HAD to pic one genre it would be Jump blues.

Grand Ole Piano
This TOTALLY caught my eye today. For the past few weeks I've actually been thinking about getting a keyboard for my apartment. Piano lessons since the age of 4 to the (so-over-it aka soverit) age of 17, I now can appreciate my parents' urge to have my sister and I become child protigies (did not happen of course). Now that I'm older, I find the need to let my creative juices flow, as well as find some calm in my life. Now since I don't sing much anymore I'd really like to have a piano back in my life! Check this bad boy out!
Think it could fit in my apartment?! =)

Tired of the F*Word yet?
I thought I was until Project Runway's latest winner, Christian Siriano, breathed new fierceness into this fierce word, fierce! I saw this last Saturday on SNL...I tried looking for it, but didn't even think to look on NBC. Well here's something to get you through the work day and into the weekend...fInally! I'm still a hot-mess from this whole time change business. Both Amys did a grea...er...fierce job with this parody! Enjoy!

Joy Gryson
Korean-born former director of design and development of handbags and accessories for Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, Joy Gryson is coming to Target...
Her Target collection is being featured everywhere, yet all I was able to find out is that Gryson will be at Target in 2008, but I can't find an actual date anywhere. I am 99% sure I didn't miss it. The first picture below, is actually from the Target website, but not from doing a search on their website. When I do a conventional search on Target's website I get 4 matches, one of which is for Lego Prison Skeleton Carriage?! Are they trying to kill me or what! lol...well I'll definitely keep y'all posted. Oh and nothing is over $49, which is a long way from her own line where handbags can go for as much as $1200.

A really close and dear friend of mine, Mike Tello, just updated his site. If it weren't for this guy, I wouldn't have been in the position I am today - seriously. He has so much talent and so much knowledge about lifestyle, animation, graphics, culture, its INSANE!
Anywho, these screenshots don't give his ability any justice, you'll have to peep it yourself at www.versatileforward.com

AIGA Lecture Series featuring Stefan Sagmeister
A fellow and notable designer whom I went to art and design school with went to the latest AIGA Lecture Series featuring Stefan Sagmeister. I was unable to go, however, this AIM conversation was enlightening.
Via Manic
11:27:44 AM Courtney: hey did you go to the aiga event event last week
Mr. Mark: yeah
Mr. Mark: first in a long time
Courtney: how was it
Courtney: i know. I haven’t gone in ages.
Mr. Mark: it was pretty good
Courtney: what did he talk about...
Courtney: what was he like?
Courtney: i can imagine him being kinda stand-offish
Mr. Mark: authentic, smart and very comfortable with his awkwardness
Mr. Mark: smart guy
Mr. Mark: me it was inspirational beyond the design perspective. Neat guy.
Courtney: he talked beyond design?
Courtney: like what does he have to say?
Mr. Mark: well sort of. He talked some about how he shuts the studio down to take sabbaticals
Mr. Mark: i just found him to be a very self aware guy.
Mr. Mark: he sees the value in craftsmanship and respect for his work
Courtney: that is so unheard of….shut a studio down?
Mr. Mark: investing in himself and how that gives back ten fold to others around him for a year.
Mr. Mark: and he's getting ready to do it again
Courtney: hes getting ready to shut down? for a year at a time
Courtney: so inventive. risky
Mr. Mark: i'm sure that costs him multiple hundreds of thousands
Mr. Mark: not so much about survival I'd say
Courtney: (sorry i just really wish i was there, i was in transit)
Mr. Mark: it's not a - reaction - to craziness
Courtney: really?
Courtney: what would you say it is then?
Mr. Mark: it's more proactively investing in yourself and the people who work for you.
Courtney: ahh i see
Courtney: would you say a respect for the quality of life and valuing the work that everyone does?
Mr. Mark: yeah. very much so he also has a great respect for process
Mr. Mark: talked about initially turning down JayZ to do a CD cover
Mr. Mark: because they don't do that anymore and he wasn't crazy about him or his approach to the project. then said okay, I'll do it for $97k so they'd hopefully go away. they said how about $75k ? he said no thanks anyway
Mr. Mark: and then they eventually came back and agreed. he did it in 2 days before a deadline and took his credit off the CD
Mr. Mark: then he later wrote JayZ and apologized for the mediocre work
Mr. Mark: very honorable, I'd say
Mr. Mark: Jay Z loved it and didn't care about the $, he changed the credit on the CD to say
Mr. Mark: haha
Mr. Mark: now he has a side company called $97,000 to do work they don't like
Courtney: haha
Courtney: So they set up a shop for work that would be less than perfect/quality design
Courtney: isnt that a bad thing tho?
Mr. Mark: less than desirable subjects and clients, not quality of work
Mr. Mark: haha, yeah sort of if youre doing cigarette packages and whale harpoon identities, but I don't think it's like that. haha
Courtney: so what kind of work does his "top level" shop do?
Courtney: and how does it effect his employees when he takes a year off? he rehires them?
Mr. Mark: all sorts of things. He showed this really cool identity job for a concert hall in , ahh damn, can't remember, austria?
Mr. Mark: no they're all paid i'm sure
Mr. Mark: they're all working
Mr. Mark: on experimental projects
Mr. Mark: learning
Mr. Mark: growing
Mr. Mark: outside of client influence
Courtney: wow
Courtney: admirable
Mr. Mark: yeah, I thought so
Courtney: seems like hes known for "in your face" graphics
Courtney: a certain style
Courtney: like his book with the dog, yea?
Mr. Mark: i think really known for those "things i've learned in my life" works that he pulls from his own writing. the city of Paris gave him 6 billboards around the city and said, do what you'd like
Mr. Mark: nice
Mr. Mark: hey I need to run
Mr. Mark: hope you're doing well
Mr. Mark: ttys, k
Courtney: ok
Courtney: im posting this on my blog this conversation
Mr. Mark: i saw, very nice
Courtney: thx thx thx
Courtney: ok TTYL
Mr. Mark: ha
11:55:31 AM Mr. Mark: thanks court, i'll read it more and talk later
Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion by Zaha Hadid. Hong Kong.
It doesnt surprise me that Chanel has made this move. I remember Chanels models were walking out of a huge iMac sometime around winter 2006. Since then they've been making waves into the digital realm and industry. Hong Kong is in my opinion the best place to launch the mobile art. My experience in Hong Kong was that the city and the people embrace technology. Im keeping my eyes peeled for more!
MOBILE ART is above all a new form of artistic expression, an unique experience, combining architecture, art, sound creation and fashion.

LA Fashion Weak.
So I've been covering LA Fashion week off and on this week. I was quickly reminded that there are still many designers that I'm not aware of, which is half the fun of following fashion on the daily. But something is truly amiss when I'm quick to recognize only 2 of the headlining designers from the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week taking place this week, 3/7-3/14, in Los Angeles. The 2 designers I do know showing their fall collections this week, happen to be Lauren Conrad (aka LC from [insert MTV Guilty pleasure of choice] and Robin Antin's Pussycat Dolls who are appropriately coming out with a lingerie line.
Okay, we are all well aware that celebrities have been slapping their names or collaborating on everything from clothes, to fragrances, to shoes, to everything....LC, a reality TV star, is no exception. She has been allowed to not only start or own over-priced label, so far 2 collections , but was allowed to show her latest fall collection on the runway at LA Fashion week? What's sad is that she is, in reality, focused on making it in the fashion industry. Talk about the ultimate MTV- Made story?!
Fashionweekdaily.com reports that there is a Parisian influence, but if all that LC got from her trip to Paris was to add bows or small gloves to outfits that are not much different than her last 2 collections....well just see for yourself at ShopLaurenConrad.com

Fashion and Music. One Night. BRAVO!
Before I begin writing my first post in iDR, I would like to extend a very gracious thank you to Courtney for allowing me to participate and be an editor on iDR. As long (and as short) as I've known Courts, her passion for design - whether it be fonts, packaging, color, print, visual... a straight line (lol) - is as HUGE as her heart! Thank you Courts for sharing your love for the arts with all of us!
Ok... back to what I was about to write. If you missed out on Bravo's Swarovski Style Rocks fashion show/concert last night, well... YOU REALLY MISSED OUT ON AN AWESOME EVENT!!!
The best of the best in world fashion joined together for one night to show off their style and taste with the accompaniment of the most equally talented musicians.
My top favs were:
Stella McCartney with Shy Child (the models played musical chairs!!)
Dolce Gabbana with Timbaland/Keri Hudson (they DEFINITELY had the whole audience on their feet)
Versace to Iggy Pop and the Stooges (opening act)
Gucci to Roisin Murphy (she used to sing with Moloko - I looooved her performance, went so well with the outfits)
...and sadly, Valentino announced his retirement... =*(
Please please please try to catch a re-run on Bravo if you can - or I'm sure you can look it up on youtube (better yet, HERE!).
*I tried looking for photos online, mission failed.
Our 100th post goes to Jessica our new Brand Editor

ColorFULL
The general rule of colors for Spring, in my book at least, is pretty much anything goes. If you are worried about looking like a walking Skittles bag, focus on one area of your wardrobe or body to add a punch of color.
