Interview with Photographer, Suzette Lee

Photographer, biker, karate chopper, student, store manager and life enthusiast, Suzette Lee has managed to imprint her smile and personality into the minds and hearts of nearly everyone she meets!

This young lady never ceases to amaze me, she's survived a horrid bike accident that left her exterior scarred, she's balanced school life and work life (and not to mention party life) for as long as I've known her and STILL I'm left wondering, "HOW does she do it and STILL stay on point?!" Suzette's eye for beauty in all things living and non-living has presented her with many open doors for the future, but where she will go, no one yet knows, not even her. For now, let's just get to meet the girl behind SmallMediumLee and the crooked smile =)

name/site/occupation or trait
Suzette M Lee -- SML -- smallmediumee
http://www.smallmediumlee.com /

how long have you been here in ny? and what made you move from the bay area?
I've been living in New York for three years now. I came here twice before making the move, all within a two-month time frame. I felt like New York was faster paced than San Francisco, which inspired me to work more efficiently. There is also something self gratifying about finding independence.

why did you choose photography as your major and what is it about photography that inspires you to work so diligently?
As a kid, I was obsessed with nature and art (movies, pictures, anything visually stimulating) so I wanted to be a National Geographic photographer -- mostly for the travel and the love of life itself. I was raised by my dad and surrounded by two older brothers during most of my childhood. We used to watch a lot of movies because my dad was a film geek. At one point, he enrolled me into several types of martial arts -- which is where I learned most of self-discipline and perseverance. It was he who taught me to do things just "for the love of it". My brothers and their peers were really into skating while I was growing up, so I really enjoyed watching documentaries and became interested in the visual image. I decided to receive my first degree in Cultural Anthropology because I was interested in how people live.

I was most inspired when I was offered to attend the Eddie Adams Workshop in upstate New York. Basically, an intense 4-day prestigious workshop working with the world's top photojournalists, but only 100 students are handpicked out of the thousands that apply worldwide.  The workshop was very encouraging and emotionally driven as we were lectured for hours on end a day, while being showcased hundreds of monumental images throughout history. I decided to go back to school and study photography because I felt passionate about visual arts and wanted to "do more" for myself.

how would you describe your artistry?
No limits. The visual image inspires but does not limit me to just photographic print. I like building and creating anything and everything and how organic art feels. I used to make frames and frame artwork. I learned a lot about archival materials and wood work which changed the way I saw presentation. I'm constantly searching how to prsent the image, without it being just printed on a piece of paper. I work better under pressure.

who are your favorite artists or people you admire in and out of your interest in art?
My dad because he is a kid at heart and enjoys life but can maintain a vigorous work ethic. My mom because her love is unconditional. The Grouch because his music hits me.

how did the playground contact you to participate and who else were amongst the artists?
Hana Leigh Productions hit me up one day, and asked if I'd like to join The Playground. I said, "sure, I'll come out to play." We all thought it was just one of those rainy day ideas, but then the brainstorming started getting more serious. After the honeymoon phase of scheming, it all started taking its own organic form of cohesiveness. Some really rad artists in the show include Claudia Bumbac, Scott Shannon, Tim Diet, William Robbins, and Dana Goldstein.

why a teepee? tell us more about your piece.
I moved to New York with $300 dollars in my pocket, two suitcases, 3 large boxes of negatives, photographs, and camera equipment. I've always felt like a nomad, where I can just pick up and go, without really looking back. I lived in a man-made 'fort' out of bed sheets in a living room in Brooklyn for over a year. It was then, where I became interested in the concept of space - whether it be mental, physical, or emotional.  The Playground's theme was resurrected on the idea of trying to escape your childhood through the emergence of adulthood. Children build forts to feel comfortable and have their own 'space'. I was interested in the relationship between mental and physical space in New York and how it is not easy finding a new apartment in New York that you can really call "home".

I erected a teepee because they are the most primitive forms of shelter by Native Americans. Not only are they nomadic, the teepee was also designed for mobility. The circular plan mirrors nature: the earth, the sky, the seasons, life itself. In creating the piece, I inverted several black and white mural-sized photographs of New York as the jacket of the teepee skeleton. These images were based on transportation -- subway, riding a bicycle, traffic, or walking. They are symbolic because New York is constantly on the move, yet these images were grounded by the symbol of a teepee. Thus creating a bind between mobility and stability; childhood and adulthood.

what are your plans, rather, desires after graduation? will you pursue photography?
After graduation, I would like to travel more while still being able to make art and work with creative people.  I'm interested in joining the Treehouse Foundation -- they build some of the most amazing tree houses all over the world.

speak on it - anything else you'd like to let the people reading this interview know about you? any last thoughts?
Now is the time. If you fall down, get back up.

Morten Iveland speaks on Bolda Display

From our previous post on Bolda Display, we got a chance to catch up the designer himself Morten Iveland. Morten is from Oslo, Norway. He does graphic design a digital communications firm, Apt. He does wonderful work as he is also into DJing, music, and loves photography.

So what is Infamous Foundry?
Infamous is a brand new and experimental foundry. Bolda Display is the first release. The next release, Hugo™ , is due for release in april

How did you get started designing type?
Actually by coincidence. I was making a logotype with some custom letters and the result was the basic shapes of Bolda Display.

How do you start designing a typeface? Do you find flaws in an existing face?
Sometimes I see a typeface that inspires me or maybe just a basic shape that start to give me some ideas.

Did you do an apprenticeship at another foundry?
Nope. This is my first type design. Type design is an interest I picked only a couple a years ago.

It looks like you design other media. Which media do you prefer? Typography, Photography, etc?
I like to combine different medias when I'm designing. I enjoy working with my own photos and type, it gives me full control over the visual expression.

Thanks Morten for giving us the time out to bug you! For more about Morten and his work look here

Fred Flare interview on itsdesignrelated.com!

If you haven’t heard of Fred Flare, you’re missing out. This amazing website has a lot to offer- fun giftable items such as trendy accessories, terrific tees, genius jewelry, and more all for men and women. Luckily we got a great opportunity to poke the brains behind this fun site. Melissa and myself visited their flagship store in Brooklyn. You’ll see through the pictures below that they were in the process of putting together their Valentines day displays. This is definitely the place you’ll want to buy your loved one a gift. I’ll let you know now that the person receiving it will appreciate it because its not your typical Godiva chocolate box, Victoria Secret lingerie, and overpriced flowers! Ewwww, lets get creative people.

Many thanks to Jen and the team over at Fred Flare who welcomed us at the store!

Myself and Melissa here with Chris, on of the founders of Fred Flare at the flagship store.

Tell us about Fred Flare. How did the initial concept start? Who started it, when, where, etc?
Chris Bick and Keith Carollo moved from Chicago to NYC and produced their very first product in 1998. They made a pad of disposable drink coasters that they sold off the back of a bike in SoHo. Over the past 10+ years the line has grown to include stationery, home decor, accessories and clothes!

Not many people know this, but the name "Fred Flare" is actually derived from Hollywood megatalent Fred Astaire. Chris and Keith always believed that great design should be as fun and entertaining as an old musical or a modern music video. Fred Flare is meant to reflect this idea with a sparkling pop presentation of all of their favorite things!

We love all the fun items are FF. How do you choose between the millions fun products out there? How do these products shape and support the Fred Flare brand?
Fred flare is influenced by pop culture and kitschy cuteness! We like to sell the must haves that you didn't even know you needed! It's really hard to choose, but we try to do a little trendcasting and hope for the best! We seem to be doing something right! And our customers are never shy, so they always let us know what's on their radar.

The Valentines display. PEEPS!

Their "Snail Mail" Contest, fans can snail mail their hand made cards. Proceeds go to charity.

Chris, We're so glad to have met you at the store. You have such great energy. How do you find that important in life? And how do you find that a key quality as a representative of the FF?
Thanks for noticing! it's kind of my thing... With out all this energy, I don't know where we would be! There's always so much to do and the entire fred flare staff wears tons of different hats. You gotta be on your toes to keep up with all the cute fashion out there and since we are web based, we have to keep on top of the ever changing tech world. Balancing everything takes a lot of energy, luckily I have some to spare!

Keith and Chris, founders of Fred Flare!

Jen, Tell us a bit of how your typical day is like. We're definitely interested in the work day and environment at a fun company. Its too bad we missed you at the store.
Hmmm... That's an interesting question. A typical day? I don't think I've ever had a typical day! Ha ha ha. For me, as the General Manager, literally, every single day is different. I try to always start with a blog or two, then off to morning meeting, it's kind of like the fred flare homeroom. We all get to touch base on our day and then kind of give each other a pep talk! We pump up the jams, pick some orders and whistle while we work. In the summer, we have cook outs and in the winter we have pizza parties! Even though we do have A LOT of fun, we also work really super hard!

Jen, the wonderful GM at FF, here with Chris....drill bit and a deer, hmmm...interesting!

What is admirable about FF is that the site is more than a shop. It truly represents the nature of the upbeat company. The site has music, your blog, features, BFF's and of course your online shop. Why? Why the need to extend the site into other areas?
We think it's really important for our customers to know us, to see the behind the scenes and to really get an "experience". One thing I really love about our site is that you can turn up the Boombox while you're surfing the blog, see an outfit or an accessory on a celeb you really like and then jump over to the shop and find it. And don't forget about the contests! We have small contests like "what's your fave song" and then you win $25, we've even given away a wedding dress and an Ipod shuffle in the past; then you have HUGE contests like our annual NEXT BIG THING. The winner gets $1,000 and we introduce our customers to a whole heap of new crafters. We like to give our customers (also known as our besties) a well-rounded experience.

Some readers might love the idea of being a BFF, how does one get chosen and what is the criteria to be one?
Most of the BFF's work here, but we do have some "Guest BFF's". The "Guest BFF's" have been around since the beginning of the blog, commenting on EVERYTHING and really participating in any events or contests we have on the blog. We're pretty open to making new "Guest BFF's" so I guess everyone should keep on commenting...

I've gotta say Fred Flare podcast rocks! It gets me through the day. Now what can we see in the future for the podcast?
Ooohh. The podcast. That's pretty up in the air. I don't think we have a  definite plan for that just yet... We'll definitely keep coming up with great episodes!

We were lucky to stop in your flagship store in Brooklyn, do you have any plans on opening the store anywhere else in the US?
Only time will tell! We really love this store, so we're open to the idea.

What new trends will we see in the future? Anything shocking and bold? Do you find yourself trend setters?
Well, as you know, we think CUTE is always in! We LOVE sunglasses and we'll definitely be stocked out with tons of great styles for the summer! In fact, we're gonna have tons of great EVERYTHING for the summer. Cute dresses, great jewelry and super fun home accessories. Trend setters?! Heck yes! We hope so.

How do you find all these cool brands?
We LOVE going to trade shows and checking out local vendors. We get emails and sample from all over the world; what ever moves us, we go for!

How do you stay away from like other stores...Urban Outfitters?
We really believe in fred flare! We love being cute and nice and super positive. We don't try to stay away from any store, fred flare just has everything we need, so it's the one stop shop!

as FF would say: Stay Cute! Please check out their site www.fredflare.com

By building your brand do you feel that you've developed a
following.

Developing a following with Hellz wasn't initially the goal when
starting Hellz. When I started Hellz, it was more of an outlet for my
creativity than a "brand". After a span of 3 years, it's grown from a
part time hobbie to a full time hobbie that puts food on the table. I
say hobbie, 'cause I'm having way too much fun doing this to even call
it a job.  But amidst all the fun and hard work, we've created a
following of strong, intelligent women who are able to relate to me
and what Hellz is all about.

Through being able to profile and understand purchasing patterns of your customer, has it influence your creativity or business decisions?
Although most companies keep in mind what sells and what doesn't when
designing, I try to not let it influence my creativity or business
decisions. I have to be confident in myself that even though there's a
style/graphic that doesn't sell well in retail that that doesn't mean
it sucked. There's been so many times that I've designed something and
buyers/consumers just didn't get it, then next thing you know another
company does something similar to it 2 seasons later and it becomes a
hit... urgh, that can be so frustrating. So as a creative person and
forward designer, it's my job to continue to push the limits of
design. The last thing that I want with my company, is to let buyers
or purchasing patterns of my customer dictate how I design.

Not many people know that Hellz is owned and designed by a wife and husband tag team. Some of us would imagine these ingenius designs might spring from a conversation during a home-cooked dinner!?
Yeah, both Bam and I own Hellz :) Not a lot of people know because for
a while I was designing Hellz on my own. Then luckily, I was able to
convince him to get on board and help me out. It's strange because in
so many ways we're alike and not alike in the way we design and work,
however somehow we make it work and we're the best "tag team".
Everyone always asks me, "How are you able to work and live w/ your
husband?" and my answer is always, "I don't know, it just works".
There's nothing better than working with your best friend... but like
all relationships we're gonna have times where we butt heads and have
disagreements, but we've learned how to work things out and not allow
any work issues bleed into our personal lives as husband wife.
That's funny that you say people would imagine us coming up w/ ideas
over dinner, because that's what happens a lot of the times, lol.

A lot of people look to HB as the first women's wear in a heavily male dominated industry. How do you find HBs position an advantage? Do you look to the guys lines as a source of inspiration?
Well, first of all Hellz definitely isn't the first female line in
street wear... there's been other lines like, MOB and Claw Money that
were established before Hellz was. I'm always honored to be
categorized with brands such as theirs. Just to be a part of this
movement of females stepping up and doing their thing (and killing it)
in an industry that's typically run by males is not only liberating
but also very empowering. We've been able to create a niche that was
untapped prior to us coming along. Now you have other female brands
coming up who have seen us as great inspirations for what they do,
whereas a few years back the only source of inspiration for us were
men's lines... it's dope to see that that isn't the case anymore.

iDR loves that you pick iconic, strong women of the 70s and 80s. If you could pick a batch of women today, which ladies would you like to add to your list?
Agyness Deyn, Kate Moss, Omahrya Mota, Santi White, Chloe Sevigney,
Angelina Jolie

check some of their favorite chicas of today!

How do you find HB paving way for future women's wear brands?
Hellz is opening up doors and creating opportunities for future
women's brands that weren't so opened minded to the thought of women
making a name for themselves in this crazy male dominated industry.

iDR cant get enough of your clever wittiness in your writing on your tees. How do you create these tees? Do you think of a strong direction in writing first or does the art/graphics/theme direct the writing?
Everything begins with an idea and goes from there. We'll take that
idea, do research and create a concept that's cohesive amongst the
graphics, design and verbage.

What is your process in developing a whole collection?
Research, research and more research

is there anything else you would like to tell your fans, friends, peers, women in pursuit of fashion?
Follow your heart and let your passion for fashion take you to where you wanna go to achieve whatever goals you may have... and do you and fuck the rest!!

Thanks Lanie for taking the time to catch up with us! All of the editors here are super excited to see your new goods. It's definitely inspiring to see women in the creative fields such as fashion succeed and prosper.

Politics In the Pressroom: Phil Mamuyac from EA Games

Born and raised in California's Bay Area, Phil Mamuyac is a Concept Artist and Illustrator who has recently relocated to Brooklyn, New York City. Currently working on Sims3 for Electronic Arts, he's a graduate and former instructor of the San Jose State University (California) Illustration/Animation program. He's never bored—all he needs is a pen and a napkin or old receipt and he's at home (doodling, that is). Phil misses good Mexican food and Jack in the Box's chicken sandwiches and 2-for-99 cent taco deal; however, he has found (temporary?) comfort in Cuban food and NY deli sandwiches.

Do you think there is a definite look and feel of each party. A Democratic campaign looks vastly different than a Republican campaign, yes...no, and why? What are the similarities and/or differences?
I do think there are differences and similarities. Just from websites alone: yes, right off the bat, both party's sites look the same. They have your standard masthead, menus, pictures, etc. As of Thursday evening (July 3rd), the Republican site's main colors are red, gray, and black; the Democrats' the standard American red, white and blue. (As far as organization of sites goes, that's a whole other issue.)

However, on the Republican site's main scrolling pictures highlight wrong-doings of Obama--the first 3 of the 5 anyway. The Democratic party's main picture? An American flag with the overlaying text: Happy Independence Day Weekend. Very contrasting "headlines." If I were an uneducated voter--and to some degree, I still am--I think the color scheme and accusatory headlines of the Republican sites wouldn't appeal to me as much as the welcoming, familiar air of the Democratic site.

We are hearing a lot about change. Change is a buzz word that parallels in both parties. How would you graphically present change? Would you have different solutions for either candidate, and why?
I think Norman Rockwell's "The Right to Know" painting put it best: http://vwt.d2g.com:8081/rockwell_right_to_know.jpg.

Who do you think you could actually have a drink with? Which of the two would you like to get to know better on a genuine level?
I'd like to have a good discussion with both candidates and see where they truly stand on issues, behind closed doors and not in front of the media. I'd wanna see how they really feel about the state of our nation. Put all the special interests, money, glitz and glamour, smoke and mirrors aside...I'd want to (for lack of a better term) "shoot the sh*t".

Lets take a look at McCain and Obama as individuals. Does either present himself to be the next president. What is it that we look for in a President as in attributes? How does that translate into graphics?
I think the attributes we look for in the next president are strength in leadership--they will, obviously, be leading a nation, poise--how they keep it together in the spotlight while speaking to and representing the people, resiliency--how they react and adjust to obstacles in their way. We also hope and expect the next president to be helpful to us and cater to our particular needs. In this sense, I believe this is where graphically, the candidates try to connect: pictures a politician kissing a baby, holding hands with their spouse after a victory speech, visiting a local car factory--I believe the acts themselves are a visual suggestion that: "Yes, I can relate to the common American citizen." Graphically, naturally they want to be straight forward, uncluttered, easily legible.

When watching McCains "Heros" video he uses a smokey graphic throughout the video...what are you thoughts on this?
I think the smoke is meant to represent the individual. As they go through life, their path is apparent but is shaped by the people around them--the "Heroes that are right in front of us", the ones that are not necessarily famous but --the unseen air that pushes and pulls them with their influence, example...their way of living.

The Obama and Obey poster has been circulating the net for some time. What is your overall sentiment on this poster? The poster may resemble a bit of the Constructivism movement, why do you think Obey might have chose this movement and this direction?
I think the fact that the posters which these were based on were created in a period of revolution and by a people that demanded change is no mistake. The high contrast--albeit patriotic--and intense colors demand that the people actively take notice. Yes, one can easily call it "propaganda" but in essence, it's iconic nature lends itself to discussion and debate--this iDR roundtable discussion being an example the Constructivism Movement

What do you think their logos are suggesting? Please give your overall thoughts.
McCain's logo: the star points to his association with the military. One star, plain and simple, centered. It suggests strength and is reinforced by the sans serif font which implies a heaviness (like "I'm staying here.") an unmoveable mass, here for the long run. And a low-contrast striped motif in the dark background subtly bringing the theme back to the American people.

Obama's logo: the "pancake" to McCain's "waffle" logo. More curves and serif suggest a casualness about him--a certain approachability, a lightness. The main "O" suggests a sunrise of a new day while implementing the flag's colors.

Logo sidenote: I also just noticed, being an Illustrator, that the logo typefaces themselves could actually be caricatures of the candidates themselves--at least the way I think of them...

Politics In the Pressroom: Danny Le

Danny "Dandiggity" Le is a modern day connoisseur for all things analog, digital, and beautiful. Known to many as a "jack-of-all-trades" he has dipped his hands in every creative pool the South Bay has to offer. From poetry jams and art galleries, eclectic parties and the evolving street dance scene Diggity is constantly documenting, collaborating, and networking within these expanding subcultures 24/7. A graduate of San Jose State University's English and Comparative Literature program he plans is to become a teacher and shape a new generation of renaissance men and women. He currently resides in San Jose, CA finishing his first collection of poetic works. Danny represents PLSTK, who iDR has worked with on the Sound Stackin party.

Do you think there is a definite look and feel of each party. A Democratic campaign looks vastly different than a Republican campaign, yes...no, and why? What are the similarities and/or differences?
What makes a Democratic campaign drastically different from a Republican campaign is the targeted demographic they intend to attract towards their cause. For example Democrats often target people of color, people who live alternative lifestyles, and citizens disillusioned by the current party in office. These people usually come from low to middle income families and live within communities that desperately need help economically in order to repair their surrounding infrastructure. It is not surprising that many artist and musicians are currently backing candidate Obama in his presidential election. People like Ludacris, TI$A from Sa-Ra, Shepard Fairey, Common and many other street artist have been vocal about their endorsement for the senator. The Democratic Party often poises themselves as a voice of change for communities that are not majority white. Thus they are appealing to those who come from immigrant, impoverish, and socially ignored backgrounds. Compared to the Republican model which is highly conservative in its ideals and outward appearance, the Democratic Party looks inviting to any motley crew or upstanding citizen in retrospect.

We are hearing a lot about change. Change is a buzz word that parallels in both parties. How would you graphically present change? Would you have different solutions for either candidate, and why?
Change itself is constant. There is never any moment in time that "change" is not occurring. The change these political parties are looking to introduce in their campaigns is meant to fix what the current or previous president, senators, and chief staff couldn't do during their time in office. Often the need for change arises because of the political actions made by the current president. These actions may have caused the nation serious hurt on a domestic and international scale. The voice of the people wanting change are varied all over the board. The voice of todays youth and adults are different from those 30 years prior. They are adept at using computers and electronics the "boomer generation" could not have fathomed in their time. These individuals have instant access to information globally with a few quick keystrokes and mouse clicks. This is a futuristic generation that is quickly catching up with Star Trek fantasy. I would represent this change by taking a sample of the voters and showcasing them in their daily garb. I would use full bodied pictures of mostly young adults for this type of visual campaign, whether as posters or print ads. Visually seeing real voters who look like them on printed ads would help incite these young people to vote if not leave a subliminal imprint on their minds.

Who do you think you could actually have a drink with? Which of the two would you like to get to know better on a genuine level?
I would probably enjoy having a ice cold drink with Senator Obama. With political affiliations aside I think having a deep discussion about how race and his beliefs about community would be quite interesting. As a person of color myself I would rather hear what Senator Obama has to say about how he grew up in this country we live in. What he was influenced by as a kid (artist, musicians, cultures) and his thoughts on todays youth. All in all, I would like to just know the man on a personal level because he's human too.

Lets take a look at McCain and Obama as individuals. Does either present himself to be the next president. What is it that we look for in a President as in attributes? How does that translate into graphics?
When the Democratic election was concluded I thought either Clinton or Obama would have been an image of "change" in this history of the United States. The first female and black presidential candidates ever to appear and within the same year. Obama though draws people in because of his background and skin color. America is a country built on the back of slaves and immigrants. Yet it has also been a country that is plagued by its racism and xenophobic tendencies. Obama is the image of a change in the right direction, visually. Now whether this change comes or not seeing a person that is not old and white become president is for lack of better words, refreshing.

When watching McCains "Heros" video he uses a smokey graphic throughout the video...what are you thoughts on this?
The symbolism of the smoke has several meanings. It gives his message an ethereal feeling. With the montage of "heroes" and words displayed on the screen the smoke gives the whole video a nostalgic quality. Nostalgia is being used with the colors within the video. Behind the smoke colors wisps of red and yellow present a calming effect to the smoke. This effect works well when paired with the social message behind the video. It makes you absorb the message before you realize it is an endorsement for McCain. It becomes a quintessential message of American values.

The Obama and Obey poster has been circulating the net for some time. What is your overall sentiment on this poster? The poster may resemble a bit of the Constructivism movement, why do you think Obey might have chose this movement and this direction?
The strong imagery presented by Fairey with the Obama posters follows the Constructivism movement in a similar fashion. Fairey work thus far has been an experiment into phenomenology, the idea that imagery can invoke a feeling or emotion from someone. Even if the imagery itself has no relation to the subject viewing it. The person questions the image and the context of its surroundings and eventually also on the grounds onhow they are affected by it. Whoever is in Obama's advertising team knew what they were doing when they hired Shepard Fairey. The imagery of Senator Obama is stark and dynamic and in true Constructivism fashion the use of geometric shapes and bright colors pops from the poster and into the eyes and mind of the viewer. Fairey isn't a stranger to communist art and imagery. By taking elements that have made propaganda art work he has fashioned Obama into a vision of the future. Adding the word "Progress" is just like an arrow for those lost images meaning.
Click here to find out more about the Constructivism Movement

What do you think their logos are suggesting? Please give your overall thoughts.
McCain's logo is very simple in presentation. The single star possibly represents McCain. And from what I can tell it's a military star often found on the regalia of officers. McCain has been a solider and P.O.W. His symbol suggests his affiliation with his military background. Something I'm sure appeals to patriots and Americans all around. If you like stuff like that. The subtitle flag imagery in the background is a reminder of the values and loyalty of McCain to this country.

Obama's logo has many elements and meanings within its simple imagery. The use of a "O" I felt was smart as it allowed the creation of a sun like image rising from the foreground that is colored like the American flag. The logo could be interpreted as a "new day" or "new beginning" for America. Compared to McCain's logo, Obama's is more fresh and clean looking. It incorporates the flag imagery within the design itself. Not like McCain's logo which uses the flag as a background. McCain's logo looks amateurish in construction while Obama's is clean and smart.

Thanks Dan for participating! Im sure we’ll see more of you and your work in the future. Be on the look out for the next contributor on our Politics in the Pressroom Presidential coverage….

Japans riding crew T19 exclusive interview, the first stateside!

An awesome opportunity came to our doorstep, a first look and first stateside interview with Japans riding crew T19 . You can get a sense of their spirit and inspiration for this culture. Inspiration can come from anywhere in the world and can come in any form, riding alone exposes one to various information during the experience. Discover what a hamburger symbolizes to T19, its an amazingly honest perspective on the US culture. Get to know them better, read below.

Otaki, John, and Kaori

What is T19?
In the beginning, it was just a circle of friends. Back in '84, there werent really skaters around in Tokyo except for us (Mino, Skatething and me) then we were just saying we should have a team called T19. Dont we all do that when we were kids? To have a team or some sort with your buddies? Then way later in '92, we started to make our own boards as a company.

Who are your team riders?
Akira Ozawa, Saluda Masanori, Jessie Kawada, Yoppy Egawa, Akeem Nishimura, Chaka Sasao, Kentaro Tanaka, Kix Naotoshi, Ryutaro Fujii, Zizo Kitamura, Singo Iwasaki, Tani Yuma, Tommy Tadashi.

What does T19 stand for?
We just like to create a scene in Tokyo. To make skateboarding a rigid street culture in our city is still paving its way. And we'd be to happy if we can share our local characteristic diversity with the rest of the world.

Kaori and Otaki

Otaki, when did you get into riding and how?
At the age of 10. Me and 2 other friends of mine pitched in to buy one skateboard after seeing my bigger brother started to skate. On top of the board which was about 7 inches long/made out of glassfiber, there was of course the stars and stripes graphics. The area I grew up had the steepest hills around. So the only thing we used to do was to go up those hills with tictacs then down hills on the way back.

Kaori, how is it being the only woman around all these guys as team manager?
Whether or not I am the only woman, managing kids and projects is a challenge like everything else. There are always surprises and something.

How long has T19 been around?
T19 the crew or just a bunch of heads been around over 20 years. And its been roughly 16 years since it became a company.

Do you plan to get into more than "streetlife?", maybe gear, street fashion?
Well, we've been shooting and editing videos here and there around the clock but it hasnt been actualized recently. At the same time, we've been going snowboarding and shooting vidoes for Burton's promotion. Its time consuming. But we'll get something out there for sure specially skate video. Also, Singo's second signature board has been just released. To tell you the truth, I'd like to do well with our sales with the decks.

Whats worse getting hit by car door or people?
Its a chicken shit to hit a car. You just be thrown in the air and hurt yourself. But you certainly must avoid hitting other people.

Do you plan to ever tour in the US? Will you let us know?
We dont have a plan to do a US tour in the near future at the moment however, yes of course we would love to do that. If we do so, I want Jessica to be our guide.

You have a hamburger tank, what is the hamburger for?
It was created by Skatething at the end of the year 911 tragedy happened. Like how you guys were bombed by the terrorist, we've been assaulted by American culture. Hamburger is an icon of America. To us its larger than the Statue of Liberty in a symbolic way. We added the wings of dog town to that and put it on top of Allan Gelfand's tank!

Your T19 bars were a GREAT success at Fatlace and sold out so fast! Do a lot of your skaters ride bikes too?
Almost all of our riders ride bikes. 17 out of 15 ride fixed gear. Cars, motorcycles, we just love riding things.

Will you grow your fixed gear goods or concentrate more on skate goods?
Skateboard goods are and will always be our prior products. Singo's new model will be released in june. Its gonna be the Skatething's most heart putted design of all!

What would you like the U.S. skaters to learn about the T19 skaters and the skate/fixed gear scene in Japan?
Im very happy about the fact that T19 had gotten lots of attention because of this bike movement. I'd like to thank whoever has interest in what we are doing before anything. And what pleased me the most out of this is I was able to connect with those people through the movement or just bike itself as a tool which is much popular than skateboard. I would like those people who had discoverd the joy of riding bikes or learning tricks to also discover the joy of skateboarding on the same level. And I feel like it is our duty to let them experience that. Paradoxically, riding bikes convinced me that skateboarding is the coolest street sport. And I have a feeling many skaters out there are feeing the same!

Thank you T19 for letting iDR get an exclusive inside look of who you all are and what you are all about. As mentioned above, the movement is incredible isnt it? We're grateful to be connected in any shape or form; it allows us to think greater, look wider and discover beyond what is in front of us. We hope to see more of the crew ride the streets here in the US.
