We got a chance to attend the Cut and Paste Digital Design Tournament. It was fun for the last hour of the night. As you can see below the motion reels that the contestants worked on all day. Amazing work!
We also got a chance to visit Annie our friend representing 55DSL. She gave us a heads up on their TShirt contest.More info on their contest: Join the design community at the Cut&Paste Digital Design Tournament and enter this year’s Audience Design Contest (ADC) in 2D design, presented by 55DSL, to express your own creativity and challenge yourself to a rapid design round, just like the competing designers onstage.

As I'm sure MANY of you have heard, the Coraline Movie, a tale written by Neil Gaiman, is set to release February 6th (yay!) and aside from it being a 3-D motion picture (which is always fun since I looove fantasy and animation) and directed by Henry Selick (who also directed two of my favs: James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas), it also celebrates LAIKA Studio's first full-length film.
So, why the big hoohah over the film? Well, LAIKA's vision is "fueled" by Phil Knight which is exactly why Nike teamed up with the studio to create an awesome marketing tool to promote the film (thanks to creative geniuses Rob Heppler and Gian Galang) - limited Coraline Dunks!
I'd blab on about it, but almost every site has given much information about the movie and shoe that I wouldn't want to take any credit for the information I've just presented to you all lol, so make sure you click on their names to find out more about movie details, shoe release info, special codes, etc!
However, just to give you a taste and look of the Coraline Dunks, I'll present you with images from some of my friends who were fortunate enough to receive these bad boys (I believe all these guys got the "prop" sets)!
An awesome opportunity came to our doorstep, a first look and first stateside interview with Japans riding crew T19. You can get a sense of their spirit and inspiration for this culture. Inspiration can come from anywhere in the world and can come in any form, riding alone exposes one to various information during the experience. Discover what a hamburger symbolizes to T19, its an amazingly honest perspective on the US culture. Get to know them better, read below.
Otaki, John, and Kaori
What is T19? In the beginning, it was just a circle of friends. Back in '84, there werent really skaters around in Tokyo except for us (Mino, Skatething and me) then we were just saying we should have a team called T19. Dont we all do that when we were kids? To have a team or some sort with your buddies? Then way later in '92, we started to make our own boards as a company.
Who are your team riders? Akira Ozawa, Saluda Masanori, Jessie Kawada, Yoppy Egawa, Akeem Nishimura, Chaka Sasao, Kentaro Tanaka, Kix Naotoshi, Ryutaro Fujii, Zizo Kitamura, Singo Iwasaki, Tani Yuma, Tommy Tadashi.
What does T19 stand for? We just like to create a scene in Tokyo. To make skateboarding a rigid street culture in our city is still paving its way. And we'd be to happy if we can share our local characteristic diversity with the rest of the world.
Otaki, when did you get into riding and how? At the age of 10. Me and 2 other friends of mine pitched in to buy one skateboard after seeing my bigger brother started to skate. On top of the board which was about 7 inches long/made out of glassfiber, there was of course the stars and stripes graphics. The area I grew up had the steepest hills around. So the only thing we used to do was to go up those hills with tictacs then down hills on the way back.
Kaori, how is it being the only woman around all these guys as team manager? Whether or not I am the only woman, managing kids and projects is a challenge like everything else. There are always surprises and something.
How long has T19 been around? T19 the crew or just a bunch of heads been around over 20 years. And its been roughly 16 years since it became a company.
T19のやつらは20年くらい東京にいるよ。メーカーとして始まってからは16年だね。
There is a lot of riding videos on YouTube. Do you have more information about your team? Now we have web site. www.t19skateboards.com but also check our YouTube channel, http://uk.youtube.com/ridewizpride. Please come visit.
Do you plan to get into more than "streetlife?", maybe gear, street fashion? Well, we've been shooting and editing videos here and there around the clock but it hasnt been actualized recently. At the same time, we've been going snowboarding and shooting vidoes for Burton's promotion. Its time consuming. But we'll get something out there for sure specially skate video. Also, Singo's second signature board has been just released. To tell you the truth, I'd like to do well with our sales with the decks.
Whats worse getting hit by car door or people? Its a chicken shit to hit a car. You just be thrown in the air and hurt yourself. But you certainly must avoid hitting other people.
Do you plan to ever tour in the US? Will you let us know? We dont have a plan to do a US tour in the near future at the moment however, yes of course we would love to do that. If we do so, I want Jessica to be our guide.
いまのところは無いね。もちろん行きたいけど。行くならjessicaにガイドしてもらいたいな。
You have a hamburger tank, what is the hamburger for? It was created by Skatething at the end of the year 911 tragedy happened. Like how you guys were bombed by the terrorist, we've been assaulted by American culture. Hamburger is an icon of America. To us its larger than the Statue of Liberty in a symbolic way. We added the wings of dog town to that and put it on top of Allan Gelfand's tank!
Your T19 bars were a GREAT success at Fatlace and sold out so fast! Do a lot of your skaters ride bikes too? Almost all of our riders ride bikes. 17 out of 15 ride fixed gear. Cars, motorcycles, we just love riding things.
Will you grow your fixed gear goods or concentrate more on skate goods? Skateboard goods are and will always be our prior products. Singo's new model will be released in june. Its gonna be the Skatething's most heart putted design of all!
What would you like the U.S. skaters to learn about the T19 skaters and the skate/fixed gear scene in Japan? Im very happy about the fact that T19 had gotten lots of attention because of this bike movement. I'd like to thank whoever has interest in what we are doing before anything. And what pleased me the most out of this is I was able to connect with those people through the movement or just bike itself as a tool which is much popular than skateboard. I would like those people who had discoverd the joy of riding bikes or learning tricks to also discover the joy of skateboarding on the same level. And I feel like it is our duty to let them experience that. Paradoxically, riding bikes convinced me that skateboarding is the coolest street sport. And I have a feeling many skaters out there are feeing the same!

Thank you T19 for letting iDR get an exclusive inside look of who you all are and what you are all about. As mentioned above, the movement is incredible isnt it? We're grateful to be connected in any shape or form; it allows us to think greater, look wider and discover beyond what is in front of us. We hope to see more of the crew ride the streets here in the US.

NEW YORK, NY -- The One Club this week will recognize the excellence of the Typophile Film Fest 4 titles with a coveted One Show Pencil. Punchcut commissioned Brent Barson and Eric Gillette for the title design on behalf of Typophile. We could not be more pleased for Brent and Eric and the students of their Visual Arts 441 / BYU class that participated. The titles opened our Typophile Film Fest 4 to a filled-to-capacity audience of 300+ attendees at TypeCon 2007 in Seattle and was shown again to a standing-room-only crowd at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco.
Nike 1/1 film, by AKQA. Creatives: Davor Krvavac, Greg Mullen, Nick Bailey
Art and football become unlikely bedfellows in a new competition launched by Nike, which offers the chance for artists to exhibit during the Basel Art Fair and design a limited edition series of Nike Dunks.
Devised by AKQA, 1/1 invites artists to submit work to the brief ‘The Art of Football’. Works entered will be displayed in an online gallery where they will be judged by SHOWstudio’s Nick Knight - winning entrants will then see their work exhibited in a show held in Basel (coinciding with the contemporary art fair held in the city in June), alongside the work of 11 established creative talents.
One overall winner will then be chosen to have their work immortalised on a limited edition series of Nike Dunks, and the best work from the exhibition will also be included in a 1/1 book.
All work can be entered online at nike1-1.com. Submissions close on May 18.
Ive been a fan of AKQA. Their work is exceptional, consistent, and innovative for a design firm. AKQA was announced Digital Agency of the Year by no surprise by Ad Age. Here is their article.
When most of his peers were still in school, Ajaz Ahmed was embarking on a wholly different kind of education. Just 18 years old and working in Apple's marketing department on new-product launches, Mr. Ahmed landed on a conclusion that many seasoned business people are still struggling with: "The worlds of technology, media and entertainment were colliding," he says.
Four years later, Mr. Ahmed founded AKQA, a digital agency built on yet another collision. "Our belief is that marketing and product have converged," says Mr. Ahmed, the agency's chairman. "The consumer doesn't separate the marketing experience from the product experience."
Only the densest of old-school agency execs will need that one explained. There are a million ways to see how it's a dark day for advertising as it was practiced throughout most of the 20th century. Study after study shows that consumer immunity to advertising is as jacked up as it's ever been. Put simply, even if you get people to watch your ads, those ads aren't gonna fool anyone. That's why, it could be argued, the notion of agency as embodied by AKQA and shared by only a few others is the most vital one around.

Excellence. Ikea changes your perspective on bedding, linens, furniture, just about every product they have by presenting a real but exquistly interactive motion site. Forsman & Bodenfors produced this forward thinking presentation. The music choice is fitting as well.
So with the emergence of technology it was only time for fashion house to embrace it. I remember in the past Chanel had a runway that had a huge iMac as its stage. The models would walk out of the silver base. Now YSL, Yves Saint-Laurent’s Fall 2008 men’s wear collection debuts on a video instead of on the catwalk. It is completely avant garde. The Daily reports today that instead of unveiling the collection in the tradition way—elevated walkway, lots of cameras, Anna Wintour in the front row—Mr. Pilati has decided to show it off on the big screen. Its approach is to have closer connection with its audience versus the long distance of the catwalk and viewers. The London music video production company Colonel Blimp, produced this digital film.
lately i've been into abstract motion graphics. i ran into this site and love it!! there is some audio embedded too. gives me motivation to keep diversifying my skills set as a designer.
that creative communicative ideas can come from all disciplines and various mediums. that effective ideas start by sharing, connecting, innovating, shaping creativity from collective resources.
all things design.
all things related.
