Pink Friday: Join the Protest this Friday March 13th

I'm sure many of you have been aware of the recent and ongoing layoffs in our California Schools. As a product of the Los Angeles Public School System and with many friends who are teachers, it is important we show our support.

Here is a recent message I got from a Oakland Public School Parent via Facebook letting us know how we can get involved.
--
Here's the message:

As many of you know, the recent state budget cut billions of dollars from public education, and up & down the state thousands of educators are receiving layoff notices. As of yesterday, there have already been more than 25,000 pink slips issued. The deadline for pinks slips is this Friday, March 13th, and CTA has organized protests.

Parents in my city (Oakland) are organizing at the
corner of 51st and Broadway in Oakland at 4pm THIS Friday, March 13th to protest these layoffs and the school budget cuts. Please join the protests in your city (www.PINKFRIDAY09.org). Wear pink and bring your kids, cameras and protest signs.

These budget cuts are doing irreparable damage to our public school system, and shortchanging an entire generation of students of the quality education they deserve. Join us and stand up for California public school students.

Best,
Jean Parker
Oakland Public School Parent

I hope you all will take the time to show your support either by wearing Pink, Protesting, or Both!

Christmas is the most busiest time for travel so here are some travel goods for you to shop for as well as som quick travel tips!

1. Always travel ahead of schedule. Trust me you don’t want to be running to the gate last minute so add up the time to leave a healthy allowance an extra hour or hour and a half can give you enough time for last minute delays or hiccups. If you have to kill that time because you’re too early, then enjoy a cup of coffee and relaaaaax!

2. Always bring goodies; those are things to entertain you. Goodies such as magazines, ipod, laptop, book, and even some snacks are a must. A flight can feel so long so pack these items in your carry on that way you're not bored talking to the stranger with marathon mouth next to you.

3. Always have your necessities near. I travel with at least a change of clothes, mobile charger, toothbrush, baby wipes, and other various toiletries. That way if you are stranded at the airport, you have the least bit to feel clean.

4. Always be courteous to your fellow passengers. On a long flight or train ride you never know who is next to you. I ended up landing a freelance job during my flight to Los Angeles and that was under an hour! So you don't have to get super friendly but just remember they are in the same situation you are...so no room for attitude or snobbiness!

I am pretty sure now that I'm not going to buy anything b/c everything I thought would be affordable such as the scarf, handbag, and wallet are at $59.50. If I'm going to spend money on a designer piece even if it is a diffusion line, I'd rather it be an accessory where I won't be limited in wearing it...instead my wallet is limiting the line's wearability. It's okay I still got the h&m X Stella McCartney's Oversized Cardigan :-)

But I may still go to witness the madness!

Yves Saint Laurent

Betty Catroux in YSL

I urge you to make your way to the City to be inspired and to celebrate this man's life, work, and legacy. San Francisco is the only US location to house this exhibit& I'm not sure when I'll be back in the Bay so please, do share with those of us not in the area.

Here I'll plan the day for you: Start off with the museum exhibit, then go to Golden Gate Park and have a picnic, take a walk, or have some tea while you reflect on the genius you just witnessed. Then go to dinner in North Beach and momentarily pretend you have left the country.

Exhibit Description (de Young Website):

In the 1960s Yves Saint Laurent made an indelible mark on fashion with clothing emblematic of the new modernity. Yves Saint Laurent, organized by FAMSF and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, explores the designs that made Saint Laurent famous, and his inspirations drawn from art, theatre, history, literature, and nature. This exhibition contains nearly 130 accessorized garments and sketches illustrating the lines, colors, and fundamentals of Saint Laurent’s work. This is the only U.S. venue. A catalogue accompanies this exhibition.

Long Live the American Dream

Hope was reinstall in many Americans tonite as Obama and Biden were elected into the White House. We voted for what we needed, and what is necessary--Change. With change comes progression, forward thinking, and a optimistic perspective. All three concepts marks a moment in history that proves we are ready for a new era and a new leader.

On a personal note, I kept thinking "Long Live the American Dream" because it reminded me the thought that my parents instilled in me while growing up. The thought was their journey coming from another country into America to live the dream. The dream to work, to have a voice in democracy, and to provide a better future for their children. Throughout the past years there might have been mistakes from all around the corners-from your own choices, to local government, all the way to the White House. That process over time makes you lose sight the dream and grow a disbelief in politics. Perhaps it makes you feel that you cant really make all that of a difference, that's how I felt. But all that has been put to rest.

Our voice was heard today.

It proven that the American Dream still exists because people like you and me can make a difference. Simply if we don't like it, we can change it.

Live Green/Buy Vintage

Okay, so these Store and Website reviews are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy long overdue. & Just so you know, I am very happy to and willing to go shopping in the name of research, so if you would like me to check out a store or site for you feel free to let me know :-). Again, sorry...I checked/shopped these 2 sites back in June and it is now August.

So
I love vintage as much as the next person, problem is I really hate sifting through all the junk to get to the treasure. I know, I know...I'm sure the real die-hard Vintage buffs are yelling at their computer screens right now... the rack rummaging is part of the thrill, right? Well for me it isn't. That is why I was excited when I discovered these two sites: American Apparel's (AA) California Select Vintage store and Nasty Gal Vintage.

American Apparel California Select Vintage and more...

So initially I was very excited about this site because AA:
1. Did the work for me by picking out cute pieces
2. Gave me the clothing specs such as sizes, labels, measurements, materials
3. Started all bids at $9.99
4. Offered reduced shipping if you ordered several pieces at once

But before I started eBay bidding like crazy I decided to check out their actual store location in Echo Park. Together with my boyfriend we tried on about 10-15 pieces. Let me tell you, I'm not stick skinny, but I'm a pretty petite girl...and not one thing fit me or my boyfriend (no we didn't try on the same things). Bottom line is I must be The Incredible Hulk according to 70 and 80's standards and that has ultimately made me hesitant to order any vintage clothing online. Nevertheless I went home with a hot pink ruffled night gown, tan leather vest, and blue straw clutch all for about $60 some dollars...
California Select Blog

Nasty Gal Vintage

This Bay Area based owner, Sophia Amoruso, has great taste in picking out these one-of-a-kind quality vintage goods....but from my previous experience with AA I'm a little wary of ordering vintage clothing on-line. If these fits' perfectly hug these models' bodies...I'll be lucky if I can stick one leg into these very cute frocks. But I'll probably give into temptation b/c her stuff is just soooo gooood.

But Hey! that doesn't mean I can't order their accessories. She has a great Eyewear selection. So far I've ordered these France Romance Shades in Metallic Silver for $40. These are my version of the oh-so-hipster Rayban Wayfarers, which doesn't fit my face anyways...Wayfarers make my face look ChubCity! lol....oh I also bought their heart frames in purple...

Peep the Nasty Gal Blog for updates, info, and for more pics of this NastyGal model....she's real pretty don't you think?!

Sex Sex Sex and the City Movie!

Click your heels 3 times and you'll be in New York at the Sex and the City premiere!!

If only that was true, sorry chicas! At the very least the much anticipated movie release of Sex and the City will be this Friday at theaters all across America. Oooohh La La, what will be in store for us is exciting! Now I have stayed away from all the hoopla--the spoilers, the clips, the interviews, etc. I didnt want to taint my experience and I dont want to do that to you either. So for the next few days iDR will be posting Sex and the City stuff, but no spoilers here. We will be recapping and covering content about our favorite Sex and the City moments, city specific stuff, characters, fashion, etc. We've been waiting for this day to happen for so long. I hope Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda (and BIG too!) dont disappoint us! Atleast we get to see our four favorite girls in our favorite fashion forward city, New York! Sigh, its like falling in love all over again.... Can't wait to see it in theaters this May 30th! eeeeeeeeeek!
