Calvin Klein Jeans Commerical 2009, Spring/Summer
If you haven't run into this commercial you should take a look. Go ahead press play, but make sure youre not at work ; )
What do you think? Its hot, steamy and a whole lot of sex appeal. Which is probably why it got banned in some countries. In our lovely country, its censored. It is not censored in Italy, France, Spain and Germany. I did a search on who directed this video or the ad agency behind it. Found nothing! Some say that it might have been directed by David Lynch, who has done some of the famous Calvin Klein commercials. What I do like about it is that is nostalgic to its roots. It is racy and sexy (think Kate Moss and Brooke Shields) but with a modern perspective. Calvinkleinjeans.com will be the home of the brand’s future U.S. e-commerce site. Its completion will be this summer as WWD reports.
Enjoy!

NSW Liberty Dunk S/S 2009
The hype around the following dunks are slowly, and surely (undoubtedly... -ly hehe-ly), building up, and the anticipation for the drop is going to be extreme!
At first glance, I was shocked at how much I really liked the colorway, and with a closer look I enjoyed the details of floral print because it gave the Dunk JUST enough hint of femininity without having it overly mucho femme (yes, I am tri-lingual lol). Now, why all the hoo-hah over these Liberty Dunks?
Well, not only is it driven more so for us ladies, but it is also an amazing collaborative effort between Liberty (no, not the Statue of) and Nike to introduce yet another Nike Sportswear icon for women. Evil Monito graciously reported:
On a summer 2006 visit to London, Nike designers were inspired by signature fabrics they saw at Liberty, a department store set in a famous Tudor building in the heart of the West End.
The more and more I read about Liberty (having just been introduced to the name), I began digging deeper and deeper into its roots. Liberty hails from the UK and is an incredible emporium of luxurious designs, carrying and manufacturing the latest in apparel, fabrics, accessories and body care products.
Since 1875, Liberty has been synonymous with luxury and great design. Arthur Liberty’s intuitive vision and pioneering spirit led him to travel the world looking for individual pieces to inspire and excite his discerning clientele. Liberty is not a name above the door, it’s Arthur Liberty’s legacy, which stands for integrity, value, quality and above all beautifully designed product. This vision and spirit continues today within the iconic Tudor building.
Did you guys read that? YES! Since 1875! GAH! You MUST visit their site and learn more about them... amazing!
Ok, back to the dunk. The Nike Design team used the following Liberty signature fabrics; Phoebe, Nina, Venus Leaf and Strawberry Thief – "patched together on the shoe like a quilt, intricately placing the materials side by side."

The Liberty Nike Dunk Hi will be available at the Nike Sportswear store at 21 Mercer Street, New York City. Nike Sportswear at the Montalban, Los Angeles and select Nike Sportswear retailers. Please visit www.nikesportswear.com for locations.*My new bff BetseyJ just got herself hooked up with a pair of these dunks HERE - check em! (I hope that I'll be successful enough to get my hands on a pair of these!!!)

Step Up
I usually have the TV on at all times, even if I'm not watching...just to have background noise, but when I hear this song I stop whatever I'm doing. And to my surprise it turned out to be a JCPenney's commercial. .
They are really trying to stay relevant these days with this new roster of designers including:

how long have you been here in ny? and what made you move from the bay area?
I've been living in New York for three years now. I came here twice before making the move, all within a two-month time frame. I felt like New York was faster paced than San Francisco, which inspired me to work more efficiently. There is also something self gratifying about finding independence.
why did you choose photography as your major and what is it about photography that inspires you to work so diligently?
As a kid, I was obsessed with nature and art (movies, pictures, anything visually stimulating) so I wanted to be a National Geographic photographer -- mostly for the travel and the love of life itself. I was raised by my dad and surrounded by two older brothers during most of my childhood. We used to watch a lot of movies because my dad was a film geek. At one point, he enrolled me into several types of martial arts -- which is where I learned most of self-discipline and perseverance. It was he who taught me to do things just "for the love of it". My brothers and their peers were really into skating while I was growing up, so I really enjoyed watching documentaries and became interested in the visual image. I decided to receive my first degree in Cultural Anthropology because I was interested in how people live.

I was most inspired when I was offered to attend the Eddie Adams Workshop in upstate New York. Basically, an intense 4-day prestigious workshop working with the world's top photojournalists, but only 100 students are handpicked out of the thousands that apply worldwide. The workshop was very encouraging and emotionally driven as we were lectured for hours on end a day, while being showcased hundreds of monumental images throughout history. I decided to go back to school and study photography because I felt passionate about visual arts and wanted to "do more" for myself.
how would you describe your artistry?
No limits. The visual image inspires but does not limit me to just photographic print. I like building and creating anything and everything and how organic art feels. I used to make frames and frame artwork. I learned a lot about archival materials and wood work which changed the way I saw presentation. I'm constantly searching how to prsent the image, without it being just printed on a piece of paper. I work better under pressure.

who are your favorite artists or people you admire in and out of your interest in art?
My dad because he is a kid at heart and enjoys life but can maintain a vigorous work ethic. My mom because her love is unconditional. The Grouch because his music hits me.
how did the playground contact you to participate and who else were amongst the artists?
Hana Leigh Productions hit me up one day, and asked if I'd like to join The Playground. I said, "sure, I'll come out to play." We all thought it was just one of those rainy day ideas, but then the brainstorming started getting more serious. After the honeymoon phase of scheming, it all started taking its own organic form of cohesiveness. Some really rad artists in the show include Claudia Bumbac, Scott Shannon, Tim Diet, William Robbins, and Dana Goldstein.

why a teepee? tell us more about your piece.
I moved to New York with $300 dollars in my pocket, two suitcases, 3 large boxes of negatives, photographs, and camera equipment. I've always felt like a nomad, where I can just pick up and go, without really looking back. I lived in a man-made 'fort' out of bed sheets in a living room in Brooklyn for over a year. It was then, where I became interested in the concept of space - whether it be mental, physical, or emotional. The Playground's theme was resurrected on the idea of trying to escape your childhood through the emergence of adulthood. Children build forts to feel comfortable and have their own 'space'. I was interested in the relationship between mental and physical space in New York and how it is not easy finding a new apartment in New York that you can really call "home".
I erected a teepee because they are the most primitive forms of shelter by Native Americans. Not only are they nomadic, the teepee was also designed for mobility. The circular plan mirrors nature: the earth, the sky, the seasons, life itself. In creating the piece, I inverted several black and white mural-sized photographs of New York as the jacket of the teepee skeleton. These images were based on transportation -- subway, riding a bicycle, traffic, or walking. They are symbolic because New York is constantly on the move, yet these images were grounded by the symbol of a teepee. Thus creating a bind between mobility and stability; childhood and adulthood.

what are your plans, rather, desires after graduation? will you pursue photography?
After graduation, I would like to travel more while still being able to make art and work with creative people. I'm interested in joining the Treehouse Foundation -- they build some of the most amazing tree houses all over the world.

Morten Iveland speaks on Bolda Display
From our previous post on Bolda Display, we got a chance to catch up the designer himself Morten Iveland. Morten is from Oslo, Norway. He does graphic design a digital communications firm, Apt. He does wonderful work as he is also into DJing, music, and loves photography.
So what is Infamous Foundry?
Infamous is a brand new and experimental foundry. Bolda Display is the first release. The next release, Hugo™ , is due for release in april

How did you get started designing type?
Actually by coincidence. I was making a logotype with some custom letters and the result was the basic shapes of Bolda Display.
How do you start designing a typeface? Do you find flaws in an existing face?
Sometimes I see a typeface that inspires me or maybe just a basic shape that start to give me some ideas.
Did you do an apprenticeship at another foundry?
Nope. This is my first type design. Type design is an interest I picked only a couple a years ago.
It looks like you design other media. Which media do you prefer? Typography, Photography, etc?
I like to combine different medias when I'm designing. I enjoy working with my own photos and type, it gives me full control over the visual expression.

Hellz-Bellz Spring 2009 Collection
Hellz-Bellz brings us their Spring 2009 Collection: "Culture Clash"
Because they provided us with such an eloquent dialogue to describe the line, I'd like them to speak for themselves =)
"It's about that time again... Out with the old (or shall I say cold) and in with the new!!!
Hellz™ is proud to present to you our Spring 2009 Delivery I "Culture Clash" Collection. Since 2005, Hellz Bellz has provided fashion alternatives for bold and fly fashionista's around the globe. Through our signature illicit graphics & progressive designs, Hellz continues to personify female empowerment and individuality, while defying all rules of conformity.
Taking it back to where it all began... NYC of course, the collection was inspired by the cultural melting pot itself, bringing to you a collection full of vibrant colors and patterns, uniting and bridging cultural boundaries. The line features a brushed french terry pullover hoodie with triangle jacquard triangle rib and "Natural Born Badass" embroidery on the back, a zebra mesh jacket w/ contrast pop red lining, the much anticipated acid wash denim jacket with "HELLZ" and broken bottle embroidered artwork on the back, along with fashion tops, tanks, graphic tees and multi-colored leggings."
Below are my personal fav looks - LOVING the eccentric color palettes and dominating designs. Can't WAIT!
