One Sweet Day....

a couple of weeks ago I went to a Beauty Trend show at Nordstrom in Topanga Mall with my mom. Although my mom and I have different tastes, she is still my #1 shopping buddy and can somehow find things that I always seem to miss whenever we are out shopping. Here are some highlights from our fun outing...:-)

7:30 am and the line was already wrapped around the building. This is serious!
Here's my mom, looking fabulous as always :-)

As soon as the doors opened women ran up to the 2nd floor to get good seats. Luckily I suffered no injuries....this time.

I bet you'd never skip this important meal if it came tied up in a bow every morning :-)

Me enjoying my Garden Party Ring (Juicy Couture-yes that's what's it called!)

Anxiously waiting for the show and the raffle giveaways to start.

And then as soon as the show ended everyone ran back downstairs to get made-up, made over, facialed, spackled and sprinkled...lol...Makeup makes me giddy, especially surrounded by other fanatics. My mom and I headed to Shu Uemura (invest in Shu's eyelash curler) after I saw a model on the runway with the exact bronzy summery glistening cheek look I've been striving for.

And that's the end. Nordie's events are fun, we've also gone to their fragrance event. We can't wait till there Fall Beauty Trend show. The tickets are $15, but that goes completely towards a purchase of your choosing, so there's nothing to lose! These are also great events to buy gifts at since there are added giveaways and exclusive specials. Something for you and your someone special :-)

Sex And The City Back In Fashion

Sex And The City Back In Fashion

I was fortunate to spot Patricia Field at Cafeteria in Chelsea, NY. Shes amazing in person...artistic, eccentric and vibrant. The restaurant space is minimal, all white interior (seats, table, chairs, plates, etc) with lovely open windows. Cafeteria also has outside seating. I prefer the chedder and fontina mac 'n cheese plate!

Nike 1/1 Art Prize, The Art of Football

Nike 1/1 film, by AKQA. Creatives: Davor Krvavac, Greg Mullen, Nick Bailey

Art and football become unlikely bedfellows in a new competition launched by Nike, which offers the chance for artists to exhibit during the Basel Art Fair and design a limited edition series of Nike Dunks.

Devised by AKQA, 1/1 invites artists to submit work to the brief ‘The Art of Football’. Works entered will be displayed in an online gallery where they will be judged by SHOWstudio’s Nick Knight - winning entrants will then see their work exhibited in a show held in Basel (coinciding with the contemporary art fair held in the city in June), alongside the work of 11 established creative talents.

One overall winner will then be chosen to have their work immortalised on a limited edition series of Nike Dunks, and the best work from the exhibition will also be included in a 1/1 book.

All work can be entered online at nike1-1.com. Submissions close on May 18.

Farewell to Taste Ultra Lounge in SJ

Remember that place where everyone knows your name? What was Cheers to you is Taste Ultra Lounge to most of the Bay Area.

What was once a college ritual has become a Thursday nite staple for residents of San Jose and beyond. Now Taste is closing its doors. No more of Sheryls Purple drink (if you had the pleasure of having it you would know) or Pierces infamous Silverbacks. No more running room to room "trying to find our friends" when your checking someone out, lol! No more of Tastes awesome VIP hostesses & crew, ahem-Kirsi, Anita & Kim. No more random photos to check out the next day. No more Tastes resident DJs that rocked the house.

Let us raise a glass and say farewell to Taste who made Thursdays a signature night of good times. Check out DJ Rygar (the guy who made it out to SD with iDR) for the last time at Taste, 87 North San Pedro St. San Jose, CA 95110

The iDR SoCal Tour Recap: SF to LA to SD

First off, Im absolutely knackered. Sorry for the delay on the SD Recap. If I could sum up the weekend in a couple of words it would be: Eat. Sleep. Drink. Drive. And Mondays.

Thursday
DJ Rygar and myself were stuck with a delayed flight for an hour and a half. NOT COOL. What was cool was that we were able to catch the LRG after Party at LAX (we went from LAX to LAX, HA!). Very chill, very streetwear.

Friday
My good friend Ben (who basically was my guide to SoCal the whole weekend, thanks friend) took me, Melissa and some friends to his store BLENDS Costa Mesa. The store itself is very minimal with signature freezer doors. It has a self serve atmosphere with its wide open space thus the beautiful SoCal weather to flow into the store. Niiiiice.

Commissary Retail Space neighbors BLENDS

Then off to SD. We met with fellow bloggers HBW (hustlinbackwards.com), and TK (tkofthewildboyz.com) at Neighborhood (good for burgers, but I order salad). Homeboy Tony was on crutches because he hurt both of his ankles! He's a riot, check the iDR photo gallery for more of his purple cast and the HBW crew.

Tony and his crutches host DJ Rygar, HBW & iDR at Decos. It was a fun nite saved by bottle service. DJ Rygar delivered good tunes. Got everyone all hot and sweaty!

Saturday
Is it me or is downtown SD slooooooow? I could hear my heartbeat as I cross the street. It was that silent, too silent for me. Maybe Im used to the hustle of NY. Anyhow we end up eating brunch and went shopping for the boys- Blends SD, Commissary, In4mation Pop Up, 5&10. No shopping for me and Melissa, booo! lol

In4mation pop up store

We drive back up to Long Beach. Ended up at a lofty but cozy place in Santa Ana called Crosby. If you were in Chelsea/MPD (NY) at a hipster chill party that would be it or in the Mission District (SF) but a little cleaner that would it was well. What I really liked this place was that it wasn’t packed with underage, barely legal hoochie mamas. It was edgy like NY but with the chill attitude of SF, and with out all the over pretentiousness of the typical OC desperate housewives or barbies of LA. Music was on point by these kids-Free the Robots.

Sunday
Felt like forever. I was anxious to get back and get into the groove of things. The highlight of the day was exploring a side of LA I’ve never really seen. The grimer side. I took these while meandering the streets.

A juxtaposition yes? Beautiful objects in the most unexpected places. Vibrant colors in a very cement centric enviroment. The emotion across peoples faces are fascinating. Their expressions seem to be the most genuine because they live a life that isn’t about having the nicest things. The opposite of the superficial, materialistic, OC/LA stereo type.

One of my favorite things I ate all weekend was at MILK in LA. Melissa and I had Blue Velvet Cake and Toffee Ice cream. It was muy buen!

Monday
8:40 am flight back. Tee Gee= Thank Gawd!

The trip was cool. I wasn’t a big fan of SoCal at first but at the very least got me to like SoCal more AND got a chance to meet up with some cool folks. Helping support DJ Rygar is always fun! The best part-meeting up with Melissa of course! Good times. Be on the watch out as Wild 'N Krazy Kids and iDR hits up SoCal in May!

Check out the iDR photo gallery for all the pics!

XOXOxoXoxOXOX

After a long weekend of partying like a rockstar, 3 nights in a row from LA to SD (highlights to come), I was a complete zombie today at work after dropping Courts and Rygar at LAX early this morning. But at the end of the day, I happily found Lively in my mailbox, which couldn't have been better timing with the airing of new episodes of Gossip Girl tonight ;-) I've changed my gym schedule around this guilty pleasure.

p.s. If you want to make this TV show a reality in your life, you can cop some looks straight from the girl who actually designs and produces the clothes for Eleanor Walfdorf.

Jeff Staple Spring 2008 Collection and Interview

JeffStaple, the designer, the consultant, the business man, the manager, started his career by breaking into his university's printing lab to make his first run of tees. Now he's managing his store the ReedSpace, consulting for several brands/companies, and continuing to go strong with his Staple clothing line.

Staples spring designs are a solitary collection. With spring in mind it becomes automatic for people to think of blooming bright colors. Although that is what iDR expected, they had a logic behind reason. He explains further below. The attention to detail not only exists online, but is as equally superior in the quality of clothing. Overall it feels clean not frivolous with over prints, screens, texture, or color. Its also clever, like their New Era Thinking Cap. Can't wait to see their upcoming lines!

Jeff, It seems quite often small companies collaborate with big corporations. You and your team have worked with well known corporations such as LVMH, Uniqlo, Sony PS to name a few. How do you keep true to what you believe in design without selling out?
It's actually quite simple. I think the big corporations come to us because they like what we have created in our clothing line, in our retail stores, (Reed Space) and in projects we have done for other companies in the past. So I think because of the reputation we have crafted, companies come to us knowing what to expect to some extent. Don't get me wrong...We always come with something original and different for each project. But in terms of the way of thinking and how we approach a project, I think there's a very "Staple" way of thinking.

In your Spring '08 collection it seems that you thought everything out methodically—a clear concept, detailed sketches, fine typography, and strategic writing. How much of that same effort goes into producing your clothes? Do you feel you loose any details when you manufacture your ideas?
Creating a clothing collection comes down to all those fine details you mentioned. And I oversee, inspect and review each detail down to the button, rivet and stitch. The ideal is that the entire production of your collections comes out as you approved it to be. Unfortunately, the reality of creating a clothing line is that you have very little control. At the end of the day, there are hands and minds making these items that are not yours. Hence, they just don't have the same tender loving care that you have and mistakes will be made. Before you know it, hundreds and thousands of items are spread all across the planet and something is ever so slightly off. Hopefully, most of the general public doesn't even realize something is slightly off. But it drives me mad. The inexact science of apparel making is the bane of my existence.

design is in the details

iDR's favorite pick.
Reed Napa Leather Jacket is constructed well, skin is quality, and fits snug.

Is there particular item in the collection that you can see outstanding a trend? An item that can be worn again in say 5 years?
I would like to think all of them. I named the company "Staple" for a reason...haha.

I see a consistency of black, white, grey. Why use those specific colors for spring? What influenced you to remain neutral with your color palette?
That's funny. When I finished designing the line, I subconsciously made that decision. When I design the collection, I don't think about influences, or merchandising, or sales. I go blind. Almost like an MC freestyling, I let my mind go where it wants to go. When I finish, I of course show my team so they can make their comments and suggestions. My sales team said, "all the tees are white, black and grey! Everyone else is doing teal, aqua, magenta, pink etc.!" I was like "Oops! Oh well, lets run with what I did." For better or for worse, it's just what popped into my head at that moment. We'll see what happens after the season is over.

Does designing ever stop for you? You're known to work on multiple things, could you ever imagine yourself slowing down?
If you were being paid to do something you absolutely loved, would YOU want to slow down?

No Jeff we couldn't imagine.

Esquire. Franks Chop Shop. Brooklyn Industries

Cant forget the fellas, they need love too! One of my boys from NY (JD of Gilas) made it on Esquire online poll for "best dressed". Are we in high school? No no..its real. On Esquire you can vote for the Best Dressed Real Man 2008. You can best describe his style as "Grown-Up, without taking myself seriously. Gotta love color".  Here are some NY stores to hit up, Franks Chop Shop and Brooklyn Industries. The Chop Shop double as an art gallery exhibition featuring this guy, Steve Ellis  and Shut Skateboards

Happy Friday!

Its an absolutely beautiful day here in the bay area. To top it off its Friday, and HauteLook.com had this awesome necklace on sale. Melissa forward to me, thanks darling! Its a necklace of the two cities i heart so much, SF and NY...but its sold out. Ugh....Sucks! Sign up here to get in on the sales...its pretty savvy. Its all online...goodluck ladies!

How to channel JackieO.

Without the Onassis fortune...

Debuted yesterday. I don't anticipate it selling out in 15 minutes like it did with the Cavalli/H&M collabo. But I've been wrong before...so get em' while you can. Like the cute bikini!!

Taken from WWD.com:

If you’re not already mad about Marimekko, we’ll give you a bit of background on the visionary textile (and more) design company. Launched in Finland in 1951, the company came to fame in the U.S. when Jackie Kennedy purchased and wore a number of Marimekko cotton print dresses during her husband’s 1960 presidential campaign. The optimistic outlook of that era can be seen in the prints H&M chose from the Marimekko archives, the vivid colors and exciting patterns just sing of the sixties.
The collaboration between H&M and Marimekko was particularly prescient given the current fashion climate. The psychedelic swirls on the yellow and blue tunic top gently take you into the Summer of Love, but the modern design keeps it from looking costume-y. The collection is comprised of 70 pieces for women, men, and kids, and not only includes clothing, but bags, jewelry, and other accessories too. We sincerely hope you get a chance to check out the Marimekko tribute yourself because the simple, sophisticated pieces are must-buys for spring and summer. The collaboration debuted yesterday in H&M stores everywhere, so go now before it’s too late!
Black/White bikini (top $14.90, bottom $14.90)
Orange/Green jewelry (necklace $9.90, bangle $5.90)
Yellow/Blue sleeveless tunic top ($49.90)
Black/White shift dress ($49.90)
Turquoise/Hot Pink canvas tote bag ($19.90)
Black/Red long dress ($69.90)

LaLALalaLALALala

I couldn't let this go...Black Wayfarers, grungy plaid top, Skinny Sass&Bide jeans, black knee-high flat boots, low pony-tail. Please. we all know she put effort into not looking effortless. I mean come-on she is wearing The Row...she adamantly hates LA style, but still manages to channel MaryKateSiennaDunstRichie, dont you think? Don't like it...don't live here...By being in my beautiful city you can't help but be influenced by your surroundings. We generally have great weather all year round, can wear 4 inch heels b/c we pretty much drive everywhere, etc. What's up with all the hate? And other say LA people are stuck-up. I beg to differ. The best no-fail accessory is a great smile, sincere heart, and a positive, embracing attitude. She should try it.

And these girls are just cute...

p.s. I don't personally shop on Melrose...well at least a certain touristy strip of Melrose b/c I can just go to Santee Alley/LA Fashion District and get the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

GILAS sends the Tshirt from their Washington DC trip

Thanks GILAS for sending iDR a nice package along with a note.
Note reads: Hey Courts, Thanks for doing an awesome job with the T-Shirt design!! As promised, here is your shirt!! -JD
P.S. NYC misses you!!

(I definitely miss NY as well, thanks guys!)

Fontstruct. Build, Share, Download Fonts for FREE!

Lately friends have been emailing me items that they want to share, thanks guys. Wes from Imeem as well as Paloma from Il-literacry have emailed me Frontstruct. I've browsed the site before and figured this needs to be posted because of the wonderful feed back. This is truly an awesome site delivered to you by FontShop. You know its legit when FontShop has their hands on it, its not your 1000 free fonts online kind of place. It offers the ability to make your own font without having to make one old school (you know you had the project freshman year in design school). People can vote on it, download it, buy it etc.

Be on the look out for an exclusive font by iDR! If you happen to make on let us know, we'd like to see what you got
