The World’s Most Perfect Script
I always pick up little candies or treats from Japanese, Korean, Chinese stores. What is it with their packaging? I think not only are they using materials that surpass American sweets, but it has a lot to do with their typography. Because countries that rely on a more block symbols as letterforms, their kerning and overall typography treatment is impactful and beautiful at the same time. Hoefler & Frere-Jones has written this article about The World's Most Perfect Script. Now that is a bold statement! Here is what they had to say:

Breaking New Playground...
At my school's new student retreat I couldn't help notice this one guy for 2 reasons....1) He was 1 of 3 other Filipino's (including me) in the program, and 2) he was wearing an Upper Playground T-shirt. I thought to myself, he's got to be from the Bay! Well it wasn't until weeks later (I was too shy to go up to him and say your Filipino, so am I, and oh btw are you from the Bay?) that I finally caught up with him and discovered that he wasn't from the Bay, but he did work in SF for 2 years. So then we talked a little about Upper Playground, other Bay Area spots, and then Sushi House in Alameda! And then I got all homesick...
Anyways, as it turns out, according to NYMag, Upper Playground is coming to play on the East Coast. So go check it out...and I'm just curious...do we still like Upper Playground? I guess so if they can open up another store in NYC, despite the economy. Just curious.

Diane von Furstenberg can now add Comic Book Writer to her resume, in which her DC Comic is making its debut at the same time as the launch of her Holiday Collection, which was inspired by Wonder Woman.
The comic book will sell for $25 along with other items at DVF boutiques and online at dvf.com and will benefit Vital Voices, an organization that works to empower women.

Charlotte Ronson will be designing a diffusion line for J.C. Penney and will be in stores this Spring.

The Plano, Tex.-based retailer has signed a long-term deal with the New York-based Ronson to design a full contemporary sportswear collection called I [Heart] Ronson, hitting 600 of Penney’s 1,093 stores for spring selling. The line will also be available on jcp.com and in Penney’s catalogues.
The collection is the latest in a series of exclusives launched by Penney’s this year as it seeks both to add buzz to its fashion offerings, especially in the contemporary and juniors areas, and lure the cautious consumer in the difficult economy.

"The Old Horned Deity"
While I was at Chari & Co. last week, I couldn't help but notice a crazy scene in a shop across the street. Now I really can't describe it so I'll let the photos speak for themselves. But here are the details:

"In personification of the horned god Pan, harsh fluid collaged wood-cut print landscapes of gnarly trees, vibrant skies, birds of prey, hidden critters, and overgrown foliage will cover three walls of the gallery from floor to ceiling [literally!]... Pan was known to arouse inspiration or panic depending on his intentions. He was the god of woods and pastures, the mountain peaks and rocky crests..."

Memory Cloud...
My other awesome buddy Stephen and his brother are yet again going to awe the British public with his artistry. If you're in the Trafalgar Square, London area next week, check out this event that puts communication to the next level. Not to mention they were named one of the top 10 public art exhibits according to Telegraph (this alongside the waterfalls in NYC - I've posted some of these before hehe)!
"Memory Cloud is based on smoke signals - one of the oldest forms of visual communication, for three nights the public will be invited to participate by sending text messages that will be grafted onto plumes of smoke. Fusing ancient and contemporary forms of communication, Memory Cloud creates a dynamic hybrid space that will project personal statements as part of an evolving text, animating the built environment through conversation. The method of textual inscription works with light as virtual ink that perceptually writes and erases through a cinematic interplay with the external environment. Memory Cloud aims to motivate social interaction through the construction of an environment that is given form through a collective act of writing space. "

Train Car Project
One of my talented friends, Scotty, is having an exhibition at PAPA B STUDIOS, in Brooklyn, NY from October 10th-22nd called the TRAIN CAR PROJECT.
