This week's industry's news
NY: Art Gallery Openings
For the last exhibit in its Chelsea space, the Bowery-bound White Box gallery is letting a bunch of tattoo artists have free reign — on paper, anyway. The artisans from New York Adorned will ink up photos taken by the downtown scenester Patrick O’Dell. Meanwhile Exit Art offers “Summer Mixtape Volume 1,” a collection of the curators’ favorite work from local artists this year. They’ll also provide a soundtrack on a specially programmed jukebox. Go listen and look.

Everywhere: As Sales Rise, McDonald's Will 'Evolve' Dollar Menu
McDonald's, which has faced increasing pressure from its usually docile franchisees over the low margins of its dollar menu, says it is determined to tweak the offerings until they're profitable. The chain intends to continue offering inexpensive options, says Ralph Alvarez, the chain's president-COO, "but what sits on that menu will look different than now because it has to be profitable."

Everywhere: YouTube, Big Media Firms Becoming Friends
Cnet's Greg Sandoval suggests that peace may be near for Google and Hollywood, who have long been at war over the amount of pirated videos that appear on Google's video-sharing site, YouTube. Indeed, if deals like the one announced last week with Lionsgate are any indication, YouTube could soon be the legal home to clips from popular movies and TV shows. Why? Now that Google has ramped up its content filtering efforts, major movie and TV studios are softening to the prospect of having their stuff passed around the video-sharing site, which has an unmistakable brand and an unmatchable reach in online video.

Everywhere:Facebook To Deepen Ties With App Developers
As bloggers complained that Facebook announced a whole lot of nothing at its developer conference in San Francisco, developers happily received news of the social networking giant's new application verification process. Closely held Facebook now plans to begin verifying applications in order to allow some developers greater access to Facebook features than others. Jia Shen, co-founder of app maker RockYou, told The Wall Street Journal: "I am really happy they clarified the sorts of applications they want on the site. For a long time, that wasn't clear."

Out of necessity, Evil Monito was founded as an online magazine, an early pioneer of internet journalism that challenged the ‘traditional’ ways an online publication functioned.

Leather Jackets are not easy to pull whether you are a guy or a girl, but I think it's much harder for a guy to pull off without unintentionally channeling Travolta from Grease. Here are some tips on how to make sure you come off as a Bad Boy rather than one of the Village People.
The Perfect Fit
• A leather jacket should hug your shoulders, not slouch off them.
• Well-made leather jackets come with high-cut armholes, eliminating excess fabric—like a quality steak trimmed of unnecessary fat.
• Notice how slim and snug—and cool—this jacket is? Don’t be afraid to try on a jacket a size smaller than you think you need. It will often give you the fit you’re hoping for.
• Slim sleeves—that aren’t too long—are the final ingredient. And you want that ingredient list complete. Unlike with a suit jacket, you’re not going to get your leather jacket tailored.
• Your jacket should not reach halfway down your thighs. Like a good jean jacket, it should hit at your waist.
How Not to Buy a Leather Jacket
• You are not Indiana Jones; leave the distressed brown leather bomber jacket to Harrison Ford.
• And on that note, those World War II tobacco-brown replica bombardier jackets? Absolutely not.
• No patches.
• Leather jacket, good; leather blazer, not so good.
• Unless you just climbed off a Ducati, please refrain from padded, striped racing jackets.
• Zippers, yes; buttons, no.
• And remember, you’re not buying a leather coat, you’re buying a leather jacket. It should fit like one.

Born and raised in California's Bay Area, Phil Mamuyac is a Concept Artist and Illustrator who has recently relocated to Brooklyn, New York City. Currently working on Sims3 for Electronic Arts, he's a graduate and former instructor of the San Jose State University (California) Illustration/Animation program. He's never bored—all he needs is a pen and a napkin or old receipt and he's at home (doodling, that is). Phil misses good Mexican food and Jack in the Box's chicken sandwiches and 2-for-99 cent taco deal; however, he has found (temporary?) comfort in Cuban food and NY deli sandwiches.
Do you think there is a definite look and feel of each party. A Democratic campaign looks vastly different than a Republican campaign, yes...no, and why? What are the similarities and/or differences?
I do think there are differences and similarities. Just from websites alone: yes, right off the bat, both party's sites look the same. They have your standard masthead, menus, pictures, etc. As of Thursday evening (July 3rd), the Republican site's main colors are red, gray, and black; the Democrats' the standard American red, white and blue. (As far as organization of sites goes, that's a whole other issue.)
However, on the Republican site's main scrolling pictures highlight wrong-doings of Obama--the first 3 of the 5 anyway. The Democratic party's main picture? An American flag with the overlaying text: Happy Independence Day Weekend. Very contrasting "headlines." If I were an uneducated voter--and to some degree, I still am--I think the color scheme and accusatory headlines of the Republican sites wouldn't appeal to me as much as the welcoming, familiar air of the Democratic site.
We are hearing a lot about change. Change is a buzz word that parallels in both parties. How would you graphically present change? Would you have different solutions for either candidate, and why?
I think Norman Rockwell's "The Right to Know" painting put it best: http://vwt.d2g.com:8081/rockwell_right_to_know.jpg.
Who do you think you could actually have a drink with? Which of the two would you like to get to know better on a genuine level?
I'd like to have a good discussion with both candidates and see where they truly stand on issues, behind closed doors and not in front of the media. I'd wanna see how they really feel about the state of our nation. Put all the special interests, money, glitz and glamour, smoke and mirrors aside...I'd want to (for lack of a better term) "shoot the sh*t".
Lets take a look at McCain and Obama as individuals. Does either present himself to be the next president. What is it that we look for in a President as in attributes? How does that translate into graphics?
I think the attributes we look for in the next president are strength in leadership--they will, obviously, be leading a nation, poise--how they keep it together in the spotlight while speaking to and representing the people, resiliency--how they react and adjust to obstacles in their way. We also hope and expect the next president to be helpful to us and cater to our particular needs. In this sense, I believe this is where graphically, the candidates try to connect: pictures a politician kissing a baby, holding hands with their spouse after a victory speech, visiting a local car factory--I believe the acts themselves are a visual suggestion that: "Yes, I can relate to the common American citizen." Graphically, naturally they want to be straight forward, uncluttered, easily legible.
When watching McCains "Heros" video he uses a smokey graphic throughout the video...what are you thoughts on this?
I think the smoke is meant to represent the individual. As they go through life, their path is apparent but is shaped by the people around them--the "Heroes that are right in front of us", the ones that are not necessarily famous but --the unseen air that pushes and pulls them with their influence, example...their way of living.
"It's not just our clothes. This year we're planning on DJs, abundant food and drink, a slip n' slide, and screen printing. The fine folks at Cinefamily will be joining us to show hand-picked obscure films, and they're bringing Family Bookstore. And that's just the beginning. We'll be selling our wares (and our friends' wares) 'til the sun goes down. After sunset, live music, special guest performers and a raving mad dance party take over."

Things have come to a slow down here at iDR. You might just wondering what are we doing as of late? I don't like to air my own personal life, however, a loss in my family has left my time and my brain occupied. The rest of the girls will definitely keep you up to date with what is on their table.
Francis Neil Zamora manages government affairs programs for Nolte Associates, Inc. and their clients. He believes all politics are local and has been actively involved in politics and campaigns at the grass roots level much of his career. When he's not involved politics Francis can be found on trip somewhere in world with Christine, buying way to much gear at REI.
Do you think there is a definite look and feel of each party. A Democratic campaign looks vastly different than a Republican campaign, yes...no, and why? What are the similarities and/or differences?
Each political party definitely has its own look and feel. However, what you see today is vastly different from what you saw yesterday and what you will see tomorrow.
History has shown us that the look and feel of our two major parties has always evolved and changed. The Republicans are the party of Abraham Lincoln, the president who freed African-Americans from slavery and used the power of the federal government to hold the union together when southern states clamored for more states rights. Today, you can make the argument that the Republican party has not been the standard bearer when it comes inclusiveness and has been a strong advocate for a smaller federal government with more rights deferred to the states.
On the other hand the southern part of the United States used to be solid states for the Democratic party. In fact, the last Democrat to carry the south was John F. Kennedy (through the help of LBJ). Many socially conservative Democrats in the south turned away from the party during the Civil Rights era and have not come back. Today, Democrats have a hard time stealing away southern states which are consistently part of the Republican win-column.
Looking forward to tomorrow, I believe this election is a watershed year for the look and feel of each party. Can a "maverick-Republican" win the presidency without the enthusiasm and mobilization of hardcore conservatives? If Senator McCain loses does this drive the Republican party further to the right? Will the Democratic Party see another exodus of socially conservative-Democrats now that their candidate of choice (HRC) is not in the election?
It's anyone’s guess but the one thing we can count on is that things will change.
We are hearing a lot about change. Change is a buzz word that parallels in both parties. How would you graphically present change? Would you have different solutions for either candidate, and why?
I'm not a designer so this is an interesting question for me. In the spinning world of perception, Senator Obama is clearly the change candidate and there is very little the McCain campaign or the GOP can do to take that away from him.
On the other hand, can John McCain be anything but the establishment candidate given his decades in Congress and that his party is in the White House. You can say McCain is a maverick and he crosses party lines. However, the day after he clinched the Republican nomination, President Bush stood John McCain up in the Rose Garden and said this my guy.
As far as my graphical representation, how about this:
Obama Change =)
McCain Change =(
Not really sure if that works on a shirt though.
Who do you think you could actually have a drink with? Which of the two would you like to get to know better on a genuine level?
Is this really a fair question? John McCain is married to the chairwoman of one of the largest beer distributors in the nation! Free beer! How do you beat that?
Seriously, I would choose Barack Obama. I believe he is one of the most charismatic figures of our time. Our country has not seen a movement with so much intensity and energy since the RFK campaign.
Lets take a look at McCain and Obama as individuals. Does either present himself to be the next president. What is it that we look for in a President as in attributes? How does that translate into graphics?
Are Senators McCain and Obama presidential enough? The answer is overwhelmingly yes.
The true question then becomes what kind of president are you looking for. Senator McCain projects a no-nonsense image of rigid strength. Voters looking for someone who will stand toe-toe with our enemies and punch them in the mouth in a post-9/11 world will be drawn to McCain.
Senator Obama projects hope and a provides inspiration. Let's face it, it is not the greatest of times. People are losing their homes, the dollar is weak and Americans are unpopular world wide. Voters who believe that this country is headed in the wrong direction will continue to move towards Obama.
When watching McCains "Heros" video he uses a smokey graphic throughout the video...what are you thoughts on this?
"Heroes" is a reflection of values. Many Americans believe we live in a country of moral relativism. Nice piece, plays to his base, however I'm not sure how this work for swing and independent voters.
all things design. all things related.
